Sustainability & Motorsport - Part 1
23 November 2020 – The motorcycling case with K.i.S.S. Programme
We know that, in the mind of the common people, motorsport sector is not so close to a sustainable management of its events from environmental and social standpoint.
However over the last 10 years much has been done and Right Hub would like to make it visible through a series of short articles.
Let’s start today with the motorcycling sector where the International Federation of Motorcycling - FIM was a true pioneer in adopting its “Environmental Code” back in 1994.
From that time FIM started its very well known “Ride Green” programme, a comprehensive plan which for instance includes another key initiative called K.i.S.S - Keep it Shiny and Sustainable - inspired and named by Yamaha Motor Racing General Manager Operations, Marco Riva, in accordance with the FIM Director of Sustainability Commission, Kattia Juarez Dubon, IRTA, DORNA and the racetracks.
Born in 2013 at Mugello Circuit during the Gran Premio d’Italia MotoGP, actually KiSS Mugello was the first ever sustainable event management programme in motorcycling (… may be the first ever done in motorsport sector).
The sustainable event management includes many initiatives covering for example the following areas:
- Improve and favorite a proper waste management and reuse of materials;
- Fight against food waste and collection of food unserved;
- Procure goods and services from local suppliers and social enterprises;
- Ad hoc “call to action” campaigns (plastic-free, stop cigarette butts littering, electronic waste littering, biodiversity, etc.);
- Spectators and operators engagement to raise awareness on circular economy;
- Eco-friendly transportation and mobility;
- Co-operation with local authorities, not for profit organisations, etc.
- Link with the Sustainable Development Goals – UN 2030;
- Fundrasing activities.
It effectively and concretely involves all the event’s stakeholders: operators, promoters, teams, riders, suppliers, sponsors, circuits, spectators, not for profit organisations, institutions and community.
KiSS Mugello has been successfully replicated in 2014 – 2015 – 2016 – 2017 – 2018 – 2019 with a scaling up initiatives plan over 7 years. Unfortunately, due to covid-19 and the cancellation of Grand Prix, it was not organized in the current year.
If you like to know more about, please have a look and read at Right Hub case study: www.kissmugello.com

The current year has dramatically been impacted by COVID-19 as well as all the motorsport events (cancelled or postponed or closed-doors managed) therefore even KiSS programmes has consequently been impacted.
We are very confident this our short article can contribute to raise awareness of people on what and how much motorsport sector is doing to make more sustainable its events management.
Right Hub is fully involved in that challenge having built over the last 6 years a wide experience and strong know-how in motorsport sector, which requires a very peculiar approach and strong sensitivity.
Looking forward to keep you posted on any good news from us and from the motorsport world!
